Obituary for George-Ann Maltby

George-Ann Maltby, 79 of Midland, died Monday evening, January 29, 2018 at the MidlMichigan Medical Center. She was born July 22, 1938 in Grand Rapids, daughter of the late George and Anne (Buth) VandenBerge. After high school, George-Ann attended Michigan State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in English. While in college, she met her husband Richard A. Maltby. He preceded her in death July 17, 2017. George-Ann had a lively spirit and was incredibly outgoing. She was known for being sociable and tremendously caring. She put her entire being into everything she did. George-Ann was a voracious reader and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She enjoyed reading biographies and autobiographies learning as much as she could about people and various cultures. As an adolescent, she learned how to play the violin and she continued to play throughout the years, performing with the Midland Community Orchestra. Her love of the violin and music lead her on her path to religion where she found a home with Freeland United Methodist Church nearly 20 years ago. Music was also a beloved pastime she spent with her late husband Richard. Together they enjoyed going to the symphony together. George-Ann and Richard also bowled as part of a couple’s league while living in New York. Once Richard could no longer bowl, the couple began square dancing. Together they made many wonderful friendships that would last through the years. As a family, Richard, George-Ann and their two children enjoyed camping. She loved to visit the Great Lakes, especially Lake Michigan and thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the trees.

George-Ann is survived by her two children Michael Maltby and Holly Maltby both of Midland; brother John (Nancy) VandenBerge of Chicago, IL; sisters Karen Peters of Eau Claire, WI and Jane (Bob) Steward of Portage; brother-in-law Bill Maltby of Freeland; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, George-Ann was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Ted Peters and sister-in-law Betty Maltby.

Memorial services for George-Ann will take place 11 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2018 from the Freeland United Methodist Church, 205 E. Washington Rd. with Pastor Kayla Roosa officiating. Her family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Freeland United Methodist Church. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors.
