Obituary for June Fenton Gunderson

June F. Gunderson of Midland passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2018 with family at her side.

June was born June Lillian Fenton in Michigan City, Indiana on September 24,1928 and raised on a nearby fruit orchard. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Margaret Fenton. She completed her grade school education in a one-room school house in La Porte County, Indiana, then graduated from Isaac C. Elston High School in Michigan City, Indiana. She participated in 4-H and, in high school, she was the pianist at the Waterford Methodist Church. Also during high school, she became an avid fan of the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. She graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Pharmacology. It was at Purdue where she was wooed by the love of her life, Reigh Gunderson, whom she married on September 6, 1952 in Michigan City.

June started working as a pharmacist in the South Bend Indiana Hospital as soon as she graduated and continued to pursue excellence in pharmacology as a Registered Pharmacist for almost 40 years. She went with Reigh to Annapolis, Maryland during his deployment with the U.S. Army and worked on the base. They returned to Midland where she was hired by the Midland Hospital in 1955 to start the hospital's first state-licensed pharmacy. She took time away from the pharmacy to raise her daughters, Julie and Judy, but then returned to full-time duties until she retired in 1989. During that time she became an adjunct instructor of Clinical Pharmacy at Ferris State University as well as teaching pharmacology at several local colleges.

June enjoyed skiing and playing golf, participated in duplicate bridge groups and went on several boating adventures with family and friends. June and Reigh traveled extensively with several trips to the Holy Land and eventually visited all seven continents. She belonged to United Methodist Women as well as Seasoned Adults Fellowship at Midland First United Methodist Church. She was also an active participant in the Dow Janes stock club and the 20th Century Club.

Her family was fondly enthusiastic about her excellent culinary skills and always willing to try anything new from her kitchen, but it just wasn't Christmas without Mom's mock-plum pudding!

June is survived by her sister, Patricia Surratt, her daughters, Julie Herzog (Robert) and Judy Gunderson (William Heeschen) and her granddaughter, Margaret Heeschen. She was predeceased by her husband, Reigh.

June's family will celebrate her life with an open-house reception at the house June and Reigh built at 609 Crescent Drive. The open house will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018 from 12:30 – 3:00 PM. Those interested in contributing to a memorial are asked to consider Midland First United Methodist Church or the Midland Area Community Foundation.
