Obituary for Lillian Pantazopulos

Lillian Frances (Hamiel) Pantazopulos, age 93, passed away Tuesday, April 3rd to be with the almighty “Creator” and be with her passed family and friends. The daughter of Charles and Rose (Sautter) Hamiel was born September 28, 1924, and raised on the family farm in Manistique, MI. She left Manistique in 1942, came to Gladwin and a short time later to Midland, where she went to work for Tom’s Restaurant on Main Street and married Peter Pantazopulos (part owner) of Tom’s Restaurant in 1946. Gave birth to son Paul in 1947. With husband “Pete” bought a bar and restaurant in Williamston, MI. Sold it after a year, came back to Midland in 1950. She then worked for Pat and Midge Ross at “Circle Grill” on the circle in Midland. In late 1951 they bought Bailey’s Restaurant on Bay City Road corner of Jefferson, across from Dow, and operated it until 1967, when Peter Sr. retired. Son Peter was born in 1953, Mark in 1954. Lillian went to work at Holliday Inn as dinner hostess in fall of 1967, when Holliday Inn first opened. Worked there until 1974. Went 2 work for the city of Midland at Washington Woods Senior Housing in 1983 until 1999. Working with seniors “was the best job ever”. She “loved the residents and the absolutely great people” she worked with. She also had been a volunteer for the Red Cross, reading the Midland Daily News on to tape for the visually impaired and handicapped of Midland and Gladwin counties, which she also “loved every minute doing it”. In Lieu of flowers, remember; the Red Cross, (Our Veterans) and or the Humane Society. She also gave to “Leader Dogs for the Blind”. Cremation has already taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Lillian was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers: Daniel, Earl, Charles, Richard (Bud) and Elmer all from the U.P. and her sisters Clara Brauer, Sterling, IL and Ruth Downs of Sherrill, Iowa. She is the last of the original Hamiels, so carry on you other remaining Hamiels.
