Obituary for Richard J. Kartz

Richard J. Kartz 84 of Midland died Monday, July 9, 2018 at Stratford Pines in Midland after a short illness. Dick was born on December 18, 1933 in Midland, son of the late Louis and Helen (Jardno) Kartz. Dick attended Midland schools, graduating from Midland High School. He married the former Joyce Marden on March 7, 1959 at the Homer Methodist Church in Midland. Joyce preceded him in death on May 26, 2015. Dick served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had worked for Michigan Bell for 32 years as a cable splicer. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping, was a master woodworker and he dearly loved spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by two daughters; Linda Kartz of Midland and Lori (David) Breternitz of Saginaw, grandchildren; Nolan, Mandy, Kelsey, Garrett and Trenton. Also surviving is his brother, Bill Kartz of Buchannan, Michigan and one sister, Jean Shuler of Midland, by a special niece, Mona Tracy and her husband Phillip and their family, nephew Jeff and Kim Marden and their family, special daughters”; Kay Cieslinski, Julie Stevens and Judy Scheuffele and by his many life long friends from Michigan Bell. Also surviving is his pet cat “Nellie” and his beagles “Bridgett” and “Molly Mae” and his rabbit “Bosco B”. In addition to his wife and parents, Dick was preceded in death by siblings; Frank, Clara, Lillian and Daniel. Also preceding him in death were grandchildren; Jared and Louis Paul Cielinski.

Funeral and committal services for Dick will take place at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018 from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler. Pastor John Pohanka will officiate with burial in Homer Township Cemetery. Dick’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m. and on Friday from 1 p.m. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Heartland Hospice or S.O.S. Rescue.

Full Military Honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans. Dick’s family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Stratford Pines for the loving care giving to their father.
