Obituary for Russell LaVier

Russell, or known to many as Buster, peacefully passed away April 6, 2018 surrounded by his family and friends at home. Russ was born to Herbert and Catherine (Millhisler) LaVier, almost 85 years ago on April 13, 1933.

Russ was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan for many years. He had many discussions with his son-in-law Mike on how the team should be coached and he even renamed some of the players. He loved hunting and fishing and was known to have gotten a few deer over the years. He fished the Saginaw Bay for many years as his health allowed, then he turned in-land to fish Sugar Springs with the help of his brother-in-law Gary.
Russ attended Midland Public Schools where he met his soul mate, Barbara J. Babcock. They would have been married 65 years on April 18th. Russ joined the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Glynn 239 where he served in the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the Sanford American Legion Post 443. After serving his country, he was honorably discharged and returned to Midland to work for Dow Chemical in the power house.

By this time he and Barb had started their family. Born to them were four girls, Doris (Doug) LaVier, Vicki (Mike) Gray, Tammie (Rick) Limmer, and Jo (Ron Colvin) Ortman. Each of the girls knew they were the favorite, until he adopted his son, Buddy, his faithful cat. For the past 43 years he has colored Easter eggs with his grandchildren who called him Papa; Thomas (Angie) Demski, Tara (Jerry Mitchell) Demski ,Mark (Colleen) Dempsey, Catherine (Kyle) Edler, Russell (Mandy) Limmer, Jim (Beth) Bluemer, Jessica (Joe) Rose, Cory (Kati Johnstone) Ortman; and his great grandchildren who called him Pa, Big Pa, and Old Pa; Michael, Tiffany, Ella, Morgyn, Jay, Carson, Charlie, Joseph, and Dayna. He had a nickname for each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and deeply loved each and every one of them and would light up every time one of them was around. The family will miss his big smile and especially his big bear hugs but are comforted that he is in a better place with no pain.

Russ is also survived by his brothers-in-law George Babcock and Gary (Phyllis) Babcock and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three great-grandsons Alexander, Brandon, and Caleb Demski, his brothers Alex, Richard, Herbert, and Thomas LaVier and sisters Donna Kenyon, Gertrude Davidson, Liddie Albee, Luella Kilborn, Dorothy Mashue and sister-inlaw Elaine Babcock.

The family would like to thank special friends Del Brubaker, Del Toner, and Tony Bergtold for their many visits, and all other visitors that spent time with Russ. A warm thanks is extended to Shawn Grunas, Russ' friend and care giver for taking such good care of him. Appreciation is also extended to the VA Home Health Care team and Heartland Hospice who made Russ as comfortable as possible for the last few years.

Honoring Russ' wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, the 14th of April at the Midland American Legion Berryhill Post 165 located at 5111 Hedgewood Drive, Midland, at 12:00 pm with dinner at 1:00 pm. The family will be present from 11:00 am until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Administration Medical Center, 1500 Weiss St., Saginaw, MI 48602. Arrangements for Buster have been entrusted to the care of the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Directors, 1200 W.
