Obituary for Dirk Dell DeGeer

Dirk Dell DeGeer of Midland, Michigan passed away with his loving family by his side on May 11, 2019. He was born June 2, 1934 in Midland, the eldest son of the late Norma (Zimmerman) and Reginald DeGeer. He graduated from Midland High School and served with the United States Marine Corp in the Korean War.

Dirk was a high school athlete, United States Marine, small business owner (Central Financial Services), award-winning duck decoy carver, accomplished horseman and avid hunter and outdoorsman. But most of all, Dad [Dirk] was a father and caretaker to his family. Dad [Dirk] had 7 daughters. He adored children and animals. He built his home "in the country” where his family always included a dog, cats and horses.

He was steadfast and unwavering in the love and compassionate care he gave his wife Gretchen who suffered from multiple sclerosis, eventually moving his office to their home in order to remain her full time caretaker. On any given day, you could find him in a suit during the workday and in blue jeans and suspenders by evening, feeding the birds, walking his dog, grooming horses or maintaining the barn and property.

Dad founded DeGeer Brothers Decoys with his brother, Greg in the 1970s. They carved and collected award winning duck decoys. He was a member and supporter of Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, the National Reining Horse Association, the Michigan Quarter Horse Association, the Michigan Reining Horse Association, and Midland County 4-H. He learned to show horses in his 60s and became an accomplished competitor in the horse show arena, winning multiple state titles in the 1990’s.
He is survived by seven daughters; Debbie (John) Jackson, Diane (Roy) Hill, Denise (John) Churchel, Doreen (Mark) Nolan, Dana (Tony) Arcuri, Kirsten (Ricardo) Devoto, and Amy (Rod) Roten; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, the former Mary Gretchen VanDerwill of Bay City, his twin brothers Gar and Greg and his sister, Sue Cox.

Dad loved black coffee and apple pie. He had a funny habit of putting a cookie in his shirt pocket for an afternoon snack to share with his dog. Dad had an unexpected sense of humor, the patience of a saint, a forgiving nature, and undeniable resilience. He was a determined, persistent, and grounded man with a positive outlook that was contagious. Dad had strong faith and was a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church. He fought Alzheimer’s with the grit of a Marine and he will be missed by all that knew him.

A memorial service for Dirk will be held on June 2 at the First United Methodist Church on 315 W.Larkin Street in Midland. Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. and the memorial service will be at 3:00.
