Obituary for Duane Ward

Duane Ward, 72, of Reese, died late Saturday evening, September 7, 2019 at his residence. He was born April 4, 1947 in Grundy, Virginia, son of the late Kerby and Mary (Kastanas) Ward. Duane was a 1965 graduate of Grundy High School and served his country with the U.S. Army from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1968. On June 20, 1970 he married the former Deborah Thompson in Saginaw. Duane was employed for thirty years by General Motors, Buick Division, in Flint, retiring in 2004. He was a member of the Reese American Legion Post #139, and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Duane was a reserve police officer in Reese for many years, coached little league baseball, bowled in several leagues, and enjoyed playing poker with his friends. His greatest enjoyment of all was being “Grandpa” to his grandson, William.

Surviving besides his wife Deborah, are his children: John Ward and his wife Amanda, and Rebecca Ward, all of Reese; his grandson, William Ward; siblings their spouses; Jerry (Francis) Ward of Corpus Christi, TX, Ronald (Alicia) Ward of Corunna, Darrell (Debra) Ward of Byron, Christine (David) Lewis of Flint, Rachel Mys of Swartz Creek, and Charlotte (Randy) Hawley of Owosso. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bill and Cele Thompson of Reese, Beth and Bill Williams of Clio; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. In addition to his parents, Duane was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Mullins and his brother-in-law, Mike Mys.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2019 from Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw Street in Reese with burial to follow in the Denmark Township Cemetery. Full military graveside honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Reese American Legion Post #139. Duane’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Duane’s family.
