Elizabeth Cline Brines passed away peacefully at King’s Daughters Home in Midland on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, age 90 years. Elizabeth was born in Flint on May 23, 1928, to the late Leo D. and Helen Wolohan Cline. She was the second of their six children and was predeceased by her brothers Charles, Thomas, and Richard. She is survived by her sisters Mary Margaret (Daniel) Collins of Midland and Helen Josephine (Frederick) Brenner of Grand Rapids. She graduated from St. Mary High school in Saginaw where she was salutatorian. She attended Marygrove College and received a degree in Mathematics. While at Marygrove she met her future husband, W. Robert (Bob) Brines, who was studying at the University of Detroit. Bob and Elizabeth were married on February 3, 1951, and made their residence in Midland. They were married for 45 years until Bob’s death on March 30, 1996. Elizabeth is survived by her four children: Michael (Patricia) Brines, MD of Woodbridge, CT; Michaela (John Hoffman) Nufer of Granger, IN; Mary (Steve) Mason of Mentor, OH; and Robert (Bo) (Karen) Brines of Midland; as well as seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth was dedicated to her family, and while raising her own kids always made the effort to stay in touch with her large family of siblings, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins. She was very social and loved to visit. She had a keen fashion sense and was always drawn to bright, vibrant colors. She loved to travel, and while Bob was alive they made several trips to Ireland with various configurations of family and friends. After Bob died she continued to travel, to Italy, Spain, the Holy Land… sometimes with her siblings, and sometimes with groups put together by her good friend Father James Fitzpatrick. A favorite destination was her semi-annual trip to her son Michael’s summer home in the Berkshires in upstate Massachusetts. She was a woman of strong faith, and was a founding member of Blessed Sacrament church, where for a time she led the religious education efforts for the public school children of the parish. She leaves behind many groups of friends who will miss her sense of humor, her gracious social presence, and her determined optimism.

The Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, 207 Ashman St, Midland at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018. Rev. Fr. James Fitzpatrick will officiate. According to Elizabeth’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St, Midland, on Friday, November 30, 2018, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Leo D. and Helen Wolohan Cline scholarship fund at the University of Detroit Mercy, St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, or a local charity of the donor’s choice.
