Obituary for Gerald Michael Schieber

Talk about going out with a bang! After years of struggling, Gerald Michael Schieber left this world on September 9, 2019 as a “rock star” to all who had the gift of knowing him!

Born July 31, 1949, to Emerson and Clara (Kroll) Schieber of Midland, Jerry attended Midland schools through high school. Surrounded by his six siblings, Jerry learned to speak up when he wanted something and scream if he needed to be heard! He was always a compassionate, caring friend who showed unconditional love and was very generous. He would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was the only one he had!

A tour of duty in Viet Nam with the U.S. Army at a very young age changed his life dramatically. Jerry served with honors, receiving the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachute Badge. Afterward, life took him to the West Coast for a number of years before returning back home to Midland.

He loved spending time with friends and family and especially loved riding with the Harley Davidson group, Forgotten Eagles.

In his last few months, as he battled cancer, he was blessed to experience the presence of God and was excited to share his joy with anyone who would listen. In fact, the Saginaw Senior Center where he resided, became his new mission field where he touched more lives than he realized.

We want to give a huge “thanks!” to the entire staff at Saginaw Senior Center and Covenant Hospice for your incredible, loving care of our loved one, Jerry! He so appreciated and loved each and every one of you!

Jerry is survived by his children, Jeremiah and Sierra Schieber of California and Jared Schieber of Midland, grandson, Elijah Portello, sisters Anita (William) Murphy of Texas and Carol Sweebe of Midland, brothers William (Patricia) Schieber of Traverse City, David and Richard Schieber of Midland and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased in death by his parents, brother Lyle Schieber, sister-in-law Dora (Drake) Schieber, and brothers-in-law Ronnie Pruitt, Patrick Ryon, and Harry Sweebe.

While we will miss him dearly, we will celebrate his life at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2019 from St. John’s Lutheran Church. His family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in Great Lakes National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2019 with military honors presented by the United States Army. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the family in Jerry’s memory. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors.
