Obituary for John Charles Stephen

John Charles Stephen, 84 of Midland, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with leukemia. John had a zest for life and a smile that could light up any room. He loved his family, friends, and farming. Born February 1, 1935, he attended Midland schools then joined the Michigan National Guard in 1952.

He started his career at the Dow Chemical Company in the Saran Department, taking a brief break to join the US Army, Tank Command, during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge, he returned to Dow becoming a specialized fabricator and welder, retiring in 1990. In 1956, he married the late Nellijane “Nan” Johnson, they raised a family and raised over 30 foster children together. She preceded him in death in 1997. He later married Mary Brown in 2000. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland and Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Darla Swales (Paul); granddaughters Jessica Stephen Premo (Jason), Kahliena Rezmer (Nathan), great-grandsons Braylen and Keagan John and his wife’s children Darcy Schofield (Dan), Jeff Brown, grandson Parker, and a wonderful Florida family of nearly 30 years. He also leaves behind an abundance of loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Filipina Stephen, son Hans Stephen, and brothers Francis, Joseph, Albert, and Emil Zilincik. The family wishes to thank the staff of heartland homecare and hospice for their kindness and compassionate care. Those wishing to express sympathy may consider the Make a Wish Foundation or St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland.

Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Thursday, May 23, from 2-4 and 6-8pm, where a Vigil for the deceased will take place at 7pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10am on Friday May 24, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland. Fr. Robert Bryne will officiate with burial to follow at New Calvary Cemetery in Midland at 1:30 pm.
