Obituary for Lawrence Dale Wiersma

Lawrence Dale Wiersma (76) passed away June 11, 2019 surrounded by his family. Larry was born to Samuel and Jeanette (Douma) Wiersma of Wisconsin. He is the beloved husband of Susan (Mishler) Wiersma, father to Kimberly (Tom) Woods, Kerry Wiersma (Michael Lombardo), Erin Mapes, and Kelly (Tom) Imus; and Papa of fourteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Larry was raised on a dairy farm in Randolph, Wisconsin where with his brothers he developed his love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, gardener, woodworker, puzzler, birder and Green Bay Packer fan. A chemist, Larry enjoyed a 31-year career with the Dow Chemical Company, retiring in 2001. In his retirement, Larry volunteered with World Renew – Disaster Recovery Services helping victims of natural disasters across the country. Larry’s Christian faith was an integral part of his life. He was a longtime member of Midland Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and an elder.

He was a kind, caring, and generous man; ever faithful to family and friends. Larry especially enjoyed gatherings at the family farm and around the dinner table. He was ever witty, and loved to pull a good prank especially on his sons-in-law. He will be missed by so many.

Survivors include brothers James (Ruth) Wiersma of Green Bay, Richard (Bonnie) Wiersma of Hudsonville, and Peter (Julie) Wiersma of Zeeland; brothers in law Joe (Sue) Mishler of Sanford, Bill (Jeannie) Mishler of Claire, Steve (Kim) Mishler, John (Patti) Mishler of Beaverton; sister-in-laws Patty (Dan) Grant and Carol (Mike) Brown both of Beaverton; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Shawn Wiersma.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 14th from 4-6 pm at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home in Midland MI. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 15th at 11 AM at Midland Reformed Church. Burial will be at Tobacco Township (Dale) Cemetery in Beaverton The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Mid Michigan Cancer and Infusion Center and Mid Michigan Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
