Obituary for Lorna Kern

Lorna Kern was called from Grace to Glory on February, 5, 2019, at the age of 97. She was born October 6, 1921, daughter of the late Carl and Alma (Hecht) Auernhamer, she was baptized on October 16, 1921, and confirmed on April 14, 1935, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Richville by Rev. William Bekemeier. Her confirmation verse is Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

Lorna graduated from Vassar High School and then attended nursing school at the University of Michigan. On July 6, 1942, Lorna married Clarence (Dudley) M. Kern. He predeceased her on January 9, 1976. Lorna was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Richville, where she served on the Evangelism Committee, was involved in Bible classes, and worked as a church office volunteer. She also worked as a volunteer at the Bethesda Thrift Shop. Besides raising her family, Lorna worked at St. Michael’s Lutheran School as cook for several years and at St. Mary’s Hospital for twenty-five years as a cardiovascular technician. She enjoyed baking Christmas cookies, apple fritters, Danish pastry, stolen, pretzels, making leber gloes suppe, pickled heart and tongue. She maintained a large flower and vegetable garden and enjoyed U of M football and basketball.

She is survived by four sons, Stuart (Kathy) Kern, Gary (Bonnie) Kern, Dennis (Toni) Kern, and Brian (Sharon) Kern; eleven grandchildren, Eric Kern, Melissa Sullivan, Kevin (Maria) Kern, Kristi (Scott) Keil, Joel Kern, Micah (Angie) Kern, Anessa Rummel, Amy (Aaron) Popa, Dustin (Katie) Kern, Hans (fiancé Karli) Kern, Haley (Tony) Warnemuende; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rueben (Mildred) Auernhamer and Howard Auernhamer; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Klopf.
She was preceded in death by brothers Ernest and Glenn Auernhamer, and sister-in-law Edith Auernhamer; and brothers-in-law Helmuth (Dick) and his wife Vera, Bert, and Arnold Kern.

Funeral services will take place at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 9, 2019, from the St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 3455 S. Van Buren Road, Richville, Michigan, Rev. Rob Gadeken and Rev. Wesley Gillaspie will both officiate with burial to follow in the St. Michael’s Cemetery. Lorna’s family will receive visitors on Friday at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw Street, Reese, Michigan from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and at the church on Saturday from 10 A.M. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church or to the charity of their choice.
