Obituary for Stephen W. Smith

Stephen W. Smith, 74, died peacefully at MidMichigan Medical Center late Thursday, March 8, 2018 after an extended illness. He was born in Chicago on August 30, 1943 to Dorothy and Arthur (Bud) Smith. In 1945, the family moved to Midland making Steve a proud lifetime resident. Steve graduated from Michigan State University in 1969 with a major in Business Administration. He married the former Carole R. Zink on August 26, 1967. Working in a sales position for Michigan Bell (Yellow Pages) for many years was the “people” job which fit Steve’s personality perfectly as did the part time jobs he held after retirement at Midland Mall Customer Service and as a substitute teacher. Being an avid Chemic fan, Steve regularly attended their football and basketball games. He was an active volunteer for Chemic football for over 40 years. He also loved theater and early on he and Carole were active in Theater Guild. For several years, he served as stage manager for the Midland Concert Band then directed by Floyd Mead and also stage managed the Men of Music spring concerts. For several summers, he continued the family’s association as a camper at Camp Al-Gon-Quian on Burt Lake. He continued the meaningful outdoor experiences with Carole and his children, Bill and Bernie at its summer family camps, and now his grandchildren are continuing this legacy. Steve loved taking vacations in Florida and the Caribbean Islands where he stored up sun and warmth to help him get through Michigan’s winters.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carole, of 50 years, their son, Bill Smith of Grosse Pointe Park, daughter Bernie (Josh) Wilmer of Indianapolis and his three grandchildren, Remington, James and Ainsley Smith. Steve took great pride in the many successes of Bill and Bernie and his grandchildren. They always knew that he adored them all. He is also survived by his brother Dave (Linda) Smith of Midland and his nieces Dalyn Wertz and Pari Knights of Denver. In addition, he will be missed by many longtime friends. Together all of us will cherish our many-multi treasured memories of Steve. He was thoughtful, informed, fun, curious and caring.

Steve was an active lifetime member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a regular volunteer at funeral meals, and also served on the Worship and Arts committee and as a Deacon for the church.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 12 from 4:00p - 7:00p at Ware-Smith –Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St. in Midland and from 10:00a to 11:00a on Tuesday, March 13 prior to the funeral service at Memorial Presbyterian Church at 11:00a with The Rev.
