Obituary for Judith Lorene Zeiss

Judith Lorene Zeiss, 82, of Midland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in her home surrounded by her four daughters and her beloved therapy dog Laddie. She was born March 16, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana, daughter of the late William Kenneth Piper and Lillian Allen Piper-Dobbins. She was a 1954 graduate of Franklin Township High School in Wanamaker, Indiana where she earned the Home Economics scholarship. She attended Purdue University (1954-1956) and completed her Bachelor of Science in education with her major in Home Economics from Central Michigan University in 1977. On June 10, 1956 she was married to her sweetheart, Dennis Carey Zeiss, in the University Heights Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN. He predeceased her February 26, 2017 after 60 years of marriage.
Judy traveled overseas with her husband while he was employed by Dow Corning Corporation. She became interested in bobbin lace while living in Belgium and studied extensively to become a skilled lacemaker. She was an instructor and designer of Bobbin Lace for over thirty years and was certified by the Great Lakes Group. She served many leadership roles in the lace organizations including Great Lakes Certification Committee, founder of Mid-Michigan Lace Makers where she served as its President, IOLI member and past president.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Midland for many years. She strongly believed in Stephen Ministry of First Baptist Church of which she was one of the original leaders and to this day was still a Stephen Minister. She had a passion for bringing Christ’s love and one-to-one care to people during a time of need. Her other memberships included the Daughters of the American Revolution, 4-H, Girl Scouts. She enjoyed genealogy, and had a passion comforting people with her therapy dog, Laddie. She also enjoyed gardening, caring for her flowers, fruits and vegetables. Her greatest passion of all was living on the Zeiss Farm and sharing it with her friends and family.

Surviving are her children: Rebecca Zeiss (Clint Burhans), Marcia Zeiss (Casey Keene), Debbie Kemper-Adams ( Don Adams) , and Beth Ocelli (Tom Ocelli); grandchildren: Erin (Mario) Rodriguez, Jonathan (Andrea) Randall, Daniel (Jennifer) Zeiss, Crystal Wint, Justin (Christina) Wint, Shawn (Laura) Wint, Michael (Stacey) Kemper, Kalyn (Logan) Hudgins, Caryn (David) McAlister, Gabrielle Flowers, and Lindsey Flowers; great-grandchildren: Faith Lamb, Jilliyn Lamb, Aaliyah Randall, Scarlett Randall, Lily Wint, Landon Wint, Madelyn Wint, Mayle Peck, Mckenzie Peck, Maddie Peck, Braeden Kemper, Tandy Hudgins, Cheyane Hudgins, and Jaylen McAlister. Also surviving are her brothers, Tom (Nel) Piper and David (Sharon) Piper; sister-in-law Leslie Piper and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Dennis and parents, Judy was preceded in death by son-in-law Logan Kemper; grandson Jason Kemper; great grandson Jayden Lamb; great granddaughter Sophia Wint; and Brother Bill Piper.

Funeral Services for Judy will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018 from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St. in Midland. Judy’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon until the time of the services. Committal Services will follow in the Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery where she will be buried next to her husband Dennis. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the First Baptist Church of Midland and Midland County Cancer Services.
