Obituary for Gregory M. Schmidt

Gregory M. Schmidt, 52, of Midland, died unexpectedly at his cottage in Tawas, due to a suspected heart attack on Monday, June 11, 2018. He was born April 23, 1966 in Howell. Greg honorably served eight years with the United States Air Force and was a crash/rescue crew chief at Wurtsmith Air Force Base.

In 1992 Greg joined the Midland Fire Department. He loved his job and coworkers, and retired as Battalion Chief in 2017, after twenty-five years of service. On August 7, 1999 he married Sally Ann Watson. Greg had an adventuresome spirit, enjoying travel adventures, golfing, going out to eat, fantasy football, tv, movies, collecting things, shopping, meeting for his eight-pump chai, and spending time with family and friends at the family cottage in Tawas.

Greg loved his family, and will be missed by his wife, Sally; brothers and sisters, David (Susan) Schmidt, Donald (Shine) Schmidt, Joe (Dee) Schmidt, Judy (Steve) Kirby, Tom Schmidt, and Tim Schmidt; stepchildren, Gordy (Hilary) Wallace, and Liza (Chris) Schramm; step grandchildren, Cougar, Olivia, Cody, Hunter, Collin, Tanner, Chloe; mother-in-law, Esther Watson; brother-in-law, Tom (Wanda) Watson; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norma Wherley, and John Charles Schmidt; and by his sister, Sally Schmidt.

Greg’s final resting place will be in the All Saints Memorial Garden at Trinity Lutheran Church. Greg’s family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
